The realistic lifespan of BIAB
A properly applied BIAB set stays intact for three to four weeks on most clients. You are not waiting for it to chip — you are waiting for the nail to grow, which pushes the apex out of position and changes the balance of the nail. That regrowth line, not the finish, is what tells you it is time for an infill.
Some clients comfortably stretch to five weeks. Others, particularly anyone whose hands are in water all day, in gloves, or handling cleaning products, will do better at three. Fast natural nail growth also shortens the cycle, and that is a good sign, not a problem.
Why BIAB lifts early — and how prep prevents it
Almost all early lifting traces back to preparation rather than the product. Cuticle work has to be complete, the nail plate needs to be dehydrated properly, and the free edge must be capped so water cannot creep underneath. Products applied over even a thin film of oil will separate within days.
The apex — the slightly thicker point in the middle of the nail — matters just as much. Placed correctly, it absorbs the flex of everyday use. Placed too far back or applied too thin, the nail bends at a weak point and the overlay cracks or peels away from the natural nail.
Aftercare that actually extends the set
The single most effective habit is cuticle oil, twice a day, every day. Oil keeps the natural nail flexible underneath the overlay so it moves with your hand instead of snapping away from it.
- Apply cuticle oil morning and night — dry nails lift, hydrated nails flex.
- Wear gloves for cleaning, gardening and washing up.
- Never use your nails as tools to open, scrape or pick.
- Book infills at three to four weeks rather than waiting for damage.
- Never peel a lifted edge — it takes layers of your natural nail with it.
Infills or a full removal?
Done properly, BIAB is an infill system: the regrowth area is refilled and the shape rebalanced, so you rarely need to soak the whole set off. Most clients go many months between full removals, which is exactly why BIAB suits nails that are bitten, peeling or recovering from acrylic damage.
A full soak-off makes sense when you want to change length dramatically, if there has been widespread lifting, or if you simply want a break. Always have it removed professionally — filing back and soaking in controlled stages protects the nail plate.
